Q. What is Butler Tourism Area Life cycle? Explain and give an example from the tourism context.

Butler Tourism area life-cycle is a linear model which explains the six stages present in the development of tourism destination. As per this model designed by Butler, the stages are - exploration, involvement, development, consolidation, stagnation and rejuvenation.

Parts of Canadian Arctic,Less developed Islands, Developed Islands like Maldives, Barcelona in Spain, Certain stagnant destinations in Singapore and areas which have rejuvenated like Chile are examples of each stage.

Leakages in tourism refers to loss of revenue generated by the tourism industry to other nation's economies. If Leakage is significant, it may neutralise the earnings generated from the tourism industry.

For example, an American citizen spends a holiday in Australia rather than spending in America itself. He pays for flights, stay and food in Australia leading to tourism leakage in America.

Appreciation of exchange rate means there is a gain in the value of the exchange currency with respect to home currency. When the value of the exchanged currency rises, it is known as exchange rate appreciation. When such value goes down, it is known as depreciation of exchange rate.

For example, If 75 INR is received against one USD, and this rate goes up where 80 INR is received against one USD, it is said to be an appreciation in the exchange rate of USD.

Seasonality, with reference to tourism refers to a temporal imbalance in the tourism phenomena. Seasonality is expressed through the number of tourists, expenditures by the tourists, traffic on highways, use of forms of transportation, admissions to attractions, etc.

For example, the footfall of tourists at a hill station is higher in winters to witness snowfall while it is lower in other seasons.

Cognitive destination image is a concept by Gartner and is the sum of beliefs and knowledge which reflects the evaluation of the attributes of a destination. Geographic segmentation in tourism is segmentation of tourists based on factors like their place of origin. The important factor as tourists from different geographic regions come to a destination with different expectations.

Location quotient is a method of discovering specific industries or occupations which are unique and specialised in the regional economy as compared to national averages.

An LQ of 1.3 is a typically high LQ in the tourism sector implying that the regional tourism is 1.3 times better than the nation's average.

10.   What is ABTA and what do they do? Explain and give an example of what they do in the tourism context.

ABTA is the largest travel Association in the United Kingdom and represents travel agents, tour operators who sell high number of holidays and travel arrangements each year. This association has its own code of conduct which is required to be followed by member parties. A BTS members maintain high standards and allows tourists to travel with confidence.
